Seven questions to ask before accepting education finance

Questions about repayments, rate changes, fees and timing that deserve clear answers before an education finance agreement is signed.

The approved amount is not the only number that matters. Before accepting an agreement, ask for answers you can keep and revisit.

  1. When does repayment begin? Confirm whether study, graduation or another event affects the first debit.
  2. Can the rate change? Ask how a change would alter the instalment and total cost.
  3. Which fees sit outside the quoted instalment? Look for initiation, service or insurance costs.
  4. What happens if study is interrupted? Withdrawal or a delayed academic year may not pause the finance obligation.
  5. Can additional amounts be paid without penalty? Understand how extra payments are allocated.
  6. What does a guarantor or surety undertake? The person signing should obtain legal advice if the obligation is unclear.
  7. Who handles a payment difficulty? Keep the correct contact and understand the provider’s process before a problem arises.

Write the answers beside the household budget. A term is only useful when its effect can be seen in the months ahead.
